Ducks and Girl

A 3D-scanned reconstruction of Gerda Bier’s public sculpture “Ducks and Girl.”

The Ducks and Girl project used photogrammetry and 3D scanning to capture the sculpture by Gerda Bier, located in Leutkirch im Allgäu. The goal was to preserve the sculpture’s emotional and artistic presence digitally — a blend of nature, innocence, and motion. Through a sequence of high-resolution scans and mesh reconstruction in Blender, the sculpture was transformed into a detailed digital model. This process provided significant benefits: it preserved public art for future generations, enabled interactive visualization in AR and VR, and demonstrated how digital archiving can protect local culture from physical decay. The final model was optimized for both web and XR viewing, proving that cultural preservation can be both technically advanced and emotionally rich.

Art reimagined in digital space.

Made with:

Photogrammetry, 3D scanning, Blender, mesh optimization, XR visualization

Goal:

To explore how digital art can preserve and reinterpret public sculptures.

Summary:

This project embodies the fusion of art, technology, and preservation. By capturing a real-world sculpture in digital form, it redefined how local art can be shared and experienced globally. The result was not just a 3D object, but a timeless digital interpretation of emotion and community. “Ducks and Girl” showcased how emerging tools like photogrammetry and XR visualization can elevate traditional art — ensuring it lives on in both the physical and virtual worlds.
